Chapter twenty-six

Daffydd and his friends sat on a low wall at the edge of Brecon Industrial Estate, eating their breakfast. Overstuffed rolls from the burger van.

‘This is good,’ Rhys said, egg yolk running down his chin. ‘You kept this place quiet, knocks spots off the cafe in town.’

‘Glad it’s not raining,’ Geraint said. ‘Wouldn’t be much fun in the rain. Why are we out here?’

‘Cos I don’t want anyone to overhear us,’ Daffydd said. ‘I want to tell you my plan and don’t want eavesdroppers.’

‘OK, so spill,’ Rhys said. ‘What are you planning to use Granda Owen’s goodies for?’

Daffydd grinned and wiped his lips with a tissue. ‘I’m going to cut Wales off from England at the River Severn. We’ve got enough TNT to plant devices on both bridges and in the entrance of the Severn Tunnel. Set them all off together and it’ll be weeks, maybe months before the English sort it all out, and anyone wanting to come to Wales will have to take the long way round.’

‘The hauliers won’t like it,’ Geraint said. ‘The extra fuel will cost a fortune and everything will be delayed. It’s a great idea. Have we got enough explosive?’

‘Never mind that,’ Rhys said, ‘does Daffydd know what he’s doing with it? Blowing open seams in slate is one thing, but blowing up a bridge or a tunnel, that’s something else entirely.’

‘It’ll be fine,’ Daffydd said. ‘Granda wrote instructions for setting the charges and let’s be honest here, if a kid in London can build a bomb in his mother’s pressure cooker which shuts down the transport system for days, I’m sure we can build suitable devices. There’ll be something online. I’ll do some research.’

‘You can’t do that,’ Rhys said. ‘You start looking up bomb making on the web and the police will be all over us.’

‘That’s what everyone thinks, but they’re wrong. Looking can’t get you into trouble. How on earth can the government or the security forces monitor every single search? It’s not physically possible, even with their new GCHQ cyber department.’

‘People do get caught though,’ Geraint said. ‘I read about them every day in the paper.’

‘A few get caught,’ Daffydd said. ‘For example, you read about a drugs bust, tons of cocaine discovered on a fishing boat off the coast of Scotland, the biggest bust the country has ever known. Have you ever heard of a coke shortage?’

They shook their heads.

‘Exactly, look how much gets in undetected. I’m not planning on spending weeks researching and I won’t download anything – that’s when people get nicked. I know what I’m doing and I’ll be careful.’

‘It’s a cracking idea,’ Rhys said. ‘Cause bloody chaos for months, especially if we could strap bombs to the towers on the bridges. We probably wouldn’t be able to topple them, but just a small crack would be a disaster.’ He laughed. ‘If we pull this off, we might bring down the government.’

Daffydd grinned. ‘Probably not.’ He drained his tea. ‘So, are you with me on this?’

‘Count me in,’ Rhys said.
